A Marriage Proposal

A Marriage Proposal was written in 1889 by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, and was first performed in 1890. This 45 minute one-act play sees two neighbors through a clumsy interaction where a nervous bachelor, Ivan Vassilevitch, seeks out Stepan Chubukov, in order to ask for his daughter, Natalya Stepanovna’s hand in marriage. This leads to a series of trivial yet animated exchanges between the three until a resolution is reached… (sort of).
